The venue is The Hythe Centre in Egham, TW18 3HD. It will run on the following dates: Wednesday 25 September at 7.30pm to 9.30pm and run on recurring Wednesdays until 4 December with a break on 30 October for half term.

Also, limited availability at Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames on the same dates 3pm to 5pm.

The course will cover all you need to know to get started with oil painting and build foundations to continue to paint using this wonderful medium.

Over the 10 weeks we will explore the essential materials, colour, tone, where to start and more through a series of projects and complete at least one final oil painting. I’m keen to make sure the course suits the participants so there will be flexibility with what we do each week and I’d be keen to have any specific questions you may have before and during our time together.

Materials list

  • Oil painting paper approximately A3.
  • Drawing board bigger than A3 and masking tape for taping the paper to the board. This can simply be a piece of MDF board cut to size.
  • A variety of brushes in various sizes. Any brushes designed for oil or acrylic use.
  • Oil paints: titanium white, yellow ochre, cadmium red, burnt umber, French ultramarine blue, ivory black That’s the minimum palette of colours required but extra colours are fine too.
  • Palette and palette knife. (I notice a lot of small palettes being used at workshops which makes mixing colours difficult and messy. I’d recommend large palettes).
  • Odourless solvent for thinning oil paints and cleaning brushes. An old jam jar with lid will do the job.
  • Old rags/kitchen roll for cleaning brushes.
  • Table easel.
